You may have heard that Brandon Davies of BYU was suspended for the remainder of the NCAA basketball season for violating the BYU honor code. A big deal for a team that has a chance to have its best basketball season ever and was on pace before the suspension to be a 1 seed in the tournament. Now, as a long time sports fan, who has seen people get suspended before, I just kind of assumed he got a DUI or got in a fight or maybe even cheated in class. Well, it turns out none of the above. Brandon Davies was suspended for having sex with his girlfriend, which he actually confessed to. Apparently that is against the BYU honor code. The actual honor code from BYU's website is listed below...
Be honest
Live a chaste and virtuous life Obey the law and all campus policies
Use clean language
Respect others
Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee, and substance abuse
Participate regularly in church services
Observe the Dress and Grooming Standards
Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code
Ok, they got him on the second one there. Fair enough, he knew what he was getting into when he decided to go to BYU. But suspended for the year!? He actually volunteered the information. Is there no honor in that? Give the kid a few games suspension and be done with it. I feel bad for him. He seems like a good kid and isn't the first college guy to choose sex over...well anything.
This all leads me to Jimmer Fredette. I love Jimmer. He is basically America's sweetheart right now, but are we to believe he is a virgin, who hasn't violated that honor code at all. I don't think so. I mean he is possibly the NCAA player of the year. We have all met great basketball players in our life, and the one thing they all have in common is that they get laid. Not to mention that he may have had some caffeine or booze or something. I just don't think BYU really wants to catch these guys. So Brandon Davies was caught because he was a good kid, felt bad and confessed. Just proving, once again, that good guys finish last.
PS - I examined this entire "Teach me how to Jimmer" video and there were no honor code violations in it, but I still no clue how to actually "Jimmer". Is it just raining jump shots?
Do BYU players shower together after the games? Is that chaste and virtuous?
