The NBA regular season is over and the playoffs start Saturday, but before we get to the playoffs, we have regular season awards to hand out. Now I could wait for the actual awards to get handed out by the league, but that is no fun, and they will probably screw up something. So let's get at it.
MVP - Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls - This shouldn't shock anyone. Derrick Rose was the best player on the team with the best record this season. He was the primary scorer, primary distributor, and team leader. I honestly don't even understand an argument for any other player, but if I had to name a runner-up, I would go with Dwight Howard. He is the only other player who is as close to as important to his team, as Derrick Rose is to the Bulls. The hardest part about this pick was deciding what video to post with it, since there are over 100 D-Rose mixes on YouTube.
Most Improved Player - Derrick Rose, Chicago Bulls - This is the pick that people are going to call me a homer for, but I think it is the right pick. For some reason, nobody mentions D-Rose as the most improved player. I'm guessing it is because they think of him as the MVP. But why can't he be both? He increased his scoring from 20.8 PPG to 25.0 PPG and his assists from 6.0 APG to 7.7 APG. He improved his three-point shooting and free-throw shooting (while getting to the free-throw line more), and greatly improved his play on defense. Basically D-Rose went from the fourth or fifth best PG in the league, who was a borderline all-star, to the best PG in the league, who is the MVP.
Coach of the Year - George Karl, Denver Nuggets - People don't think of George Karl, because the Nuggets aren't considered contenders for the title, but the job he did with the Nuggets, both before and after the Carmelo trade was amazing. I mean, they went 18-7 after the Carmelo trade, without any stars on their team.
Rookie of the Year - Blake Griffin, LA Clippers - He averaged 22.5 points and 12.1 rebounds. If that doesn't convince you, this video will.
Defensive Player of the Year - Dwight Howard, Orlando Magic - This is a lock. He is so good at defense, he makes up for the fact that the rest of his team can't guard anyone.
Sixth Man of the Year - Lamar Odom, LA Lakers - One of the most versatile players in the league, average 14.4 points and 8.7 rebounds, off the bench. And he did that all while being married to the ugly Kardashian, and getting his own terrible reality TV show. It's really amazing that his game didn't fall apart.
Most Fun Guy to Rip on a Blog - Chris Bosh, Miami Heat - Not much to say here besides...PLAY THE MUSIC!!!
