Why Do People Like College Basketball More Than the NBA?

How about that game last night?  Oh yeah, it was terrible.  UCONN beat Butler 53-41 in what was an abortion of a National Championship game.  I was waiting for the media to talk about how it was a great defensive struggle, but shockingly they just said the game was terrible.  It's about time.  In fact most college basketball games are terrible.  Don't get me wrong I watch some college basketball (Illini games, and the NCAA Tournament), but it just kind of sucks.


So why are there people who like college basketball more than the NBA?  It's not because they like basketball.  If they liked basketball, they would like the NBA.  NBA basketball is about one hundred times better than college basketball, it's not even debatable.  Anybody who knows basketball at all will tell you this.

And don't give me that, "it's fundamental basketball" argument.  Fundamental basketball doesn't involve tons of missed jump shots, missed layups, and general inability to dribble without fumbling the ball.  It literally pains me to watch college basketball right after I watch a Bulls game.

So here are what I think the reasons are that someone may like college basketball more than the NBA.  Some of them are legit, and some are terrible.


1.  You grew up in a place without an NBA team - You were never exposed to what good basketball looks like at a young age and you grew attached to some college team.  Like if you grew up in Kansas, Kentucky, or Wisconsin (seriously the Bucks don't count as a real NBA team, they need to be contracted or moved).

2.  You just really love the college experience - You aren't a huge basketball fan, but you love your college and college basketball gives you a reason to hang out with your college buddies and drink.  Absolutely nothing wrong with this.

3.  You are a compulsive gambler - Supposedly college basketball is one of the few sports where you can get an edge on Vegas if you really know your stuff.  So if you are degenerate sports gambler, it could make sense to watch tons of college hoops.

4.  You love brackets - I mean, where else can you find a bracket that big.  If you just love to look at brackets this is the sport for you.  And these brackets are just going to get bigger.

5.  You love watching white people play basketball - There just aren't many white dudes in the NBA.  Oh, by the way, you are racist.

So, if you like college basketball more than the NBA, I really hope its for one of the first four reasons.  Or maybe even for the sixth reason...you like hearing guys yelling "What the fuck!" really loud during the National Championship game, like in the video below.
